In my years of experience as a business and executive coach, we have identified some key attributes that contribute to business success. Interestingly, many of the concepts contradict each other, and we often find ourselves offering conflicting advice to achieve balance.
Is that a bad thing? Rather than fight it, we at bizHQ have embraced these paradoxes as our core values in the business. Here’s why…
Collaborative Ownership
First rule of business… you can’t do it on your own. On the one hand, successful businesses need a cohesive team with an aligned vision. You need to surround yourself with the right people that you can collaborate with to achieve your goals. On the flip side, without personal ownership and accountability, things fall through the cracks and the blame game rears its ugly head. Successful businesses find the right balance between working together as a team of individuals who take ownership and are responsible for doing their bit.
Stable Change
If you are not changing, you are not growing. For businesses to succeed, there needs to be constant change and constant progress. The key is to manage this consistent change with controls, sustainable strategies and measures that ensure that change does not create uncertainty, chaos and instability.
Uncomfortable Comfort
Most business owners are searching for the sweet spot, where the business happens on autopilot with no stress. But the danger is complacency, becoming stale and falling asleep in utopia. Successful businesses are only comfortable when they push themselves out of their comfort zone,
Strict Flexibility
The key to good business practice is to have discipline, firm policies, procedures, rules of the game and processes that are adhered to, and the wisdom to know when to be flexible, adaptable, accommodating and dynamic within the confines of these structures.
Illogical Logic
You know what you know and you think a certain way which gets you a certain result. But if you are looking for a different result, logically, you need to be open to other opinions and different ways of thinking that may seem unnatural or illogical to you.
Work hard Play hard
A value that we personally hold true! What is the point of busting your gut with work if you are not achieving your personal goals and having fun in the process? When work is fun, it is no longer work. Successful businesses love what they do, and their customers love working with them. Remember, your business needs to facilitate what makes you happy.
Less talk More action
Successful teams communicate well. They meet regularly, they share ideas, they plan together, they ensure that everyone is on the same page. But more than that, they walk the talk. Discussions need to result in actions with deadlines to achieve goals.
Planned Intuition
No goal can be achieved without a plan to get you there. Plans give you structure, focus and a course of action to follow. But sometimes you have to go with your gut and do what feels right. Trust your instinct and have confidence that you will make appropriate decisions.
Although these paradoxical values seem contradictory, they reveal the truth about business success and the balance that needs to be achieved.
