It’s mid-November, and by now the usual silly season has kicked in. But there’s nothing usual about 2020, and a lot of people I am talking to are stretching the year a little further. We are all trying to salvage the year, end on a high and set ourselves up for a better 2021. There’s simply no room for procrastination, slowing down or putting things off “until the new year”.

The problem with procrastination

When you put business decisions or projects on hold until the new year, you put your business growth on hold for an entire quarter! Because, let’s be honest, nothing really starts in the new year. We take our time to get back to work and by the time we put our plans in place and get going with the implementation of the plan it’s February, and you only start seeing results in March.

The main reason why things are often not done, is because they are not started. Procrastination is one of the most expensive invisible costs in a business. Putting things off can have a major impact on your bottom line, especially if the project or decision is a positive one that aims to grow the business.

Why do people procrastinate?

It is important to diagnose the problem and the obstacles that cause procrastination. Often, it’s because you are anxious about the outcome, you don’t want to be held accountable, you don’t really feel like doing it or you simply don’t know what to do.

Just do it

I spend a lot of time coaching businesses to become more successful simply by getting them to do the things they don’t want to do! Bite the bullet, step into uncharted territory and move out of the comfort zone. Your business won’t get ahead by continuing to do what you have always done. It also won’t get ahead by doing what everyone else is doing.

It’s now or never. Once you start a project or make a decision, you get swept along and the next step becomes clearer. It gains momentum and very often it’s not as onerous as it appeared at the outset.

Have you got a project or decision that you are putting off? Is there really a good reason why you can’t start it now?

It’s now or never… make it happen.
